Words of Wisdom: Nelson Mandela
"To deny someone their human rights is to challenge their own humanity.
OR
"As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest."
Task: Choose one of the above quotations and create a well-developed paragraph.
- Explain the message or the meaning of the words he spoke.
- Do you agree or disagree with his words? Explain in detail.
- Give at least one real-world example to support your perspective (point of view).

Nelson Mandela’s words often share his perspective on how inequality leads to conflict. His life and words are clearly linked to the ongoing struggle for equal treatment in South Africa, and his vision and wisdom is still a guide to his people. In the quotation, “As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest”, Mandela clearly captures the idea that injustice for one is an injustice for all. It is difficult to argue with his perspective because of the many examples that exist in our world, today. If one group is not allowed the rights of others in a society, it is impossible to envision that society being prosperous and free of conflict. For example, the current situation at Standing Rock in the USA shows that unrest will continue if a group of people are not heard, or treated fairly. The natives in America are battling for the right to have their water and land protected, and they are finding that American Corporate interest/ profits are more important than their land. The injustice and gross inequality are creating tension and unrest to a group of Americans that are seldom seen, and less often heard.

Delete"As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest."
ReplyDeleteThe message or meaning of Mandela’s words is that we should fight poverty, injustice and gross inequality. We often ignore the problems of the world if we don’t have them, but we should care of the problems and do something about them. Mandela is right. We should fight poverty, injustice and inequality, because if we would have to go through them we would also need help. We are all in the same boat, as it is said. The quotation fits with what happened to the Sami. They went through injustice and inequality and were forced to change their religion, which was not okay. They were also part of the country and culture. One should not truly rest when this type of cruelty exist.
As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest
ReplyDeleteWhat he means by this quote is we need to see the problem in us if we want to fix it. I totaly agree in hes quote because many people see problem in other people, but cant see it in their selves.
Nelson Mandela is one of the largest and most influential freedom fighters in the history. In his quote "As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest." It makes us think about the world and how the society is and he speaks about the unfair world. None of us can rest until we’ve made this society as equal for everyone as possible. People are living in poverty and still fighting for their lives, while someone else is rich and earning a lot of money. We shouldn’t rest until poverty and injustice is exterminated. It’s pretty easy to agree with these words if you’re against inequality, especially if you’re living in poverty or if you are oppressed yourself. For example, in Norway the Sami didn’t have the same rights as the others in the society. The children couldn’t speak their own language at school; if they talked Sami the teachers treated them badly. The Sami was the indigenous people in Norway and we took their land and controlled over them.
ReplyDeleteThe world is and has been unfair for a long time now. The difference between the poor culture or group and the rich is huge. Some people survive with only 1.25 US dollars a day. With that amount of money in Norway you could barely afford a cup of coffee. Meanwhile other rich parties are having a blast and act like nothing. Luckily there are some who do not just care for the poor and unjustified people, but they try to make a difference. Nelson Mandela was a person or as they were called, a freedom fighter, that tried to make a difference. He spent most of his life in jail on Robben Island, South-Africa. Therefore you can not deny his knowledge and experience about poverty and injustice. Along with his experience he made quotes. “As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest”, this is one of his many quotes. What Nelson Mandela basically is saying is that we can never stop fighting for other people’s freedom and healthcare until we have achieved a fair and justice world without poverty and separate treatment. It will not take care of itself. It`s difficult to not agree with Mandela`s words. It is unfair that some people are living the dream life while other can`t even buy enough food for a day. More and more people should go to action instead of just feeling sorry for them. An example of someone who has faced this kind of challenge is the indigenous people in Norway. For a long time ago the Norwegians took away their culture and language. The Sami as they were called had not done anything wrong, but the Norwegians took it as their right to treat someone less than others.

ReplyDeleteAs long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest. what Nelson Mandela trying to tell us in this quote, is that if we will change something in this world we need to start changing our self. then we need to change the way people are living and threating other humans. this quote is a great quote and i totaly agree with Mandela. my name is Vetle Aronsen Nilssen and i approve this homework.
ReplyDelete"To deny someone their human rights is to challenge their own humanity." I think that Nelson Mandela means that everybody should live a life where they can decide what they want, and live with their own meanings. Many people (including me) agree to this statement, because human rights is probably the most important thing in the human life. For example in North Korea, where Kim Jung Ung is the dictator. In North Korea the people lives under these circumstances .
ReplyDelete"As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest."
ReplyDeleteWhat he means by this quoute is that if u really want to change the world then you gotta learn to change yourself, people are allways thinking about others but themselves. We gotta fight for poverty, injustice and inequality, so everybody is equal and so people stop hating others just because of their religion or skin color.
Mandela was an great man and his word, hit me hard and make a lot of sense. Just think that a man that was lock up in a prison in 27 years. Came out and said. Words that are used so peacefuli and has so many different menings. I agree 100% whit these word and i belive that Nelson Mandela change the word so much. "To deny someone their human rights is to challenge their own humanity. These briliant words are used perfectly. We can takes this back to the 1940, in the middel of world war 2. Were Hitler was doing. Mabye the derribal thing that ever happend in the human races lifetime. He tired to salughtered every singel one of the Jews. This was called the holocaust and is an imported thing that happened in history.
ReplyDelete"To deny someone their human rights is to challenge their own humanity." That Nelson Mandela trying to say is if you challenge a human’s humanity they will lose their self, and their meanings. All people mean that all should have something to say in the society and say it out loud. But in Norway for a few years ago Norwegian people had nothing to say when Denmark and after them that Sweden ruled over them.
ReplyDelete‘‘As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persists in our world, none of us can truly rest.’’
ReplyDeleteMandela’s words mean that no one should rest when we know what’s going on in this world, and how bad it can actually is. I do agree. This is a good quote because it is true and it is happening, but we just don’t always realise it. An example is that in some parts of the world they only get about one dollar a day, while other places I the world some people get a million dollar a day.

Delete“To deny someone their human rights is to challenge their own humanity”. To impose on them an awful life of hunger and deprivation is to dehumanize them. To take away their human rights is the same as taking away their whole humanity. You bring up the very truth about a person, which is not affected by stereotyping. The human rights is something every human should be able to have and lack of this can lead to people being affected by the richest and most powerful people. They become slaves or poor humans. Such has been a terrible fate of all coloured in the world under the system of apartheid. For example people in India are judged and treated according to a caste system. Instead of helping someone just because they’re human, they judge whether or not they’re worth the help by looking at which caste they belong to. Imagine yourself being an African slave or an Indian woman. It is absolutely terrible to just even think about it. No one is less worth and deserves to go through such a horrible experience.
ReplyDeleteThe human race is created to work together, care for each other and can not survive on their own. If you do not treat people the way you want to be treated how can you then be a real human being. To be a good human being is to care for other people and treat them how you want to be treated yourself. That’s why not allowing someone to have their human rights makes a person cruel and not how a real human is supposed to be. I agree strongly with these words. Or you could ask the question how you could not agree with these words. Every human being should treat others with respect and to not think that they are any better than anyone else. The best thing here is that Nelson Mandela managed to say so much about something that important in so little words. One world perspective on my point of view is North-Korea where communism rules the land. There are very strict rules in Korea and most people are isolated from the outside world. People might think they live in a great country because the government have tricked them into believing this is the best way to live.

ReplyDelete“To deny someone their human rights is to challenge their own humanity” – Nelson Mandela
ReplyDeleteThe meaning of this quote is that the human rights are for everyone, no one can deny someone that. If some do not follow the human rights, then people have right to do things that we do with them. If we do not follow the human rights, what’s the point to have them when we can’t follow them? The meaning is that the human rights is for all, then we must help the people who live in a place there they don’t follow the human rights. We can’t just feel bad for the countries that are treated badly, because we are a part of the bad if we don’t do something with that. Everyone deserve to live in a system there the human rights are. This quote of Nelson Mandela is so good because he get us people to think and go inside us and understand that people in the world are treated badly, and we need to help them! An example of this treatment is in India, there are many other countries that have this treatment to. In India they have a caste system that says someone is better than other, that’s not right because nobody should be treated like that. There are also many women and girls in India who are forced into marriage with some men they don’t want to be with, and men can do whatever they want with the women. It says something about the culture in India, and that men have more rights than women. That’s so unfair, because women are equal as men! Everyone should have the same human rights, and everyone in the world deserve that. If you are a woman, man, poor, not so good like other or actually whatever you are in this world, you deserve to have the same human rights like all other people in this world!
Our world has for lot of years been affected of injustice. Poverty is one form of injustice. This has led to the fact that the countries around the world haven’t got the same qualities and opportunities. They are thus far from being equal. For some years back, there was a man who fought for equality and was against injustice, he was willing to give up his own life just for getting his vision through. This man is known as South Africa’s freedom fighter, Nelson Mandela. During his lifetime, he gave his people some wise words. Some of them we can find in this quotation: "As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest." Behind these words, we can find the key to quit the injustice. If the situation in the world is to change someday, we all need to take a hold. We can’t just sit down on our butt back here in Norway and rest, while people on the other side of the world are starving. Even if it is far away from us, it still relates us. Their difficulties should be ours too. All of us have to fight for equality and we can’t rest until the world is without poverty and injustice! We can truly agree with this quotation, because it gives us the answers on how to not continue living, if we wish a world, that could be similar for all of us. An example of another form of injustice today is the situation in Saudi Arabia. Here, the women to a large extent, experience not to have the same right as the men. They can’t live their own life and can’t become independent of having a man around them who look for them, wherever they go. They can’t even go to the mall without support, and driving a car they can just dream of. All forms for injustice should be ended, and it is our job to complete that!
ReplyDeleteMandela was a strong and clever man that had good heart. With a lot of passion for justice and equality he made his mark in this world. “To deny someone their human rights is to challenge their own humanity”. The message Mandela is trying to get through is that if you take away human rights, then you take away their humanity. Our opinions and feelings are showing who we are. What we stand for and what we believe in. Everyone is able to make huge impact on the world or on one and each other. How should be able to develop as a united (including ourselves) if we aren’t allowed to be who we should and deserve to be. Don’t be what others want you to be. To be different is just showing that you have strength and courage to go your own way. A lot of people in the world today are living with this struggle. All over the world, there are millions of voices that do not get heard. Millions of people are not consider as not valuable, they are just a tiny piece in the big machine. Malala is a now living fighter for woman rights in Pakistan. She can be seen as a symbol on courage, strength and power. Mandela’s quotation is absolute excellent. It just not challenge you to think by yourself and have own thoughts, if gives you are another perspective. Do I live in a country where all human have human rights? Can I do something about it? Why is it like this? Injustice result into questions, questions result to action and action result into change.
ReplyDelete“As long as poverty, injustice, gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest”
ReplyDeleteThe meaning behind this quotation is that as long as people live in poverty injustice and inequality then people can not be at peace until there is made a difference. What Nelson Mandela went on to say lifts the fight against poverty, to the level of his own fight against the apartheid and reaching even deeper into history, to the movement for the abolition of slavery. People should fight against poverty and support those who need help. The sentence can be strongly agreed, because there are people in the world that still live with poverty and not treated equally. A society is divided into two different categories, those who are called rich and those who are called poor. Those who are rich earn enough to support themselves and their family. And those who live in extreme poverty earn less than a dollar a day which is very little to support themselves. Those who earn enough money can maybe be caring enough to give to those who need help.
"To deny someone their human rights is to challenge their own humanity." I strongly agree with Nelson Mandela. The reason why I agree with Mandela is because his thoughts around this quotation, is so very meaningful and deep. What Mandela means by this quotation is that a person no matter colour ore belief, deserves the human rights, and if they don’t get them the people that are taking them from them treats them like animals. Because every human being deserves the human rights. That’s why they are called the human rights, so if you deny someone their human rights it like you say they’re not as human as you. It’s almost the same as just saying their animals. People should live after the golden rule do to other what you want them to do to you. I would start to feel less worth and felt that I am not as good human being as the whites. The people on lands that are ruled by a leader that controls everything foreinstans north Korea are ruled by a dictator and he is not giving all the people in the country what they deserve
ReplyDelete"As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest."
ReplyDeleteToday there are people all over the world that suffer and live under bad conditions, and one of the reasons of this is because they live in poverty. Nelson Mandela is a very important person when you talk about this. Mandela was a person that often set all other people before him. He had a different sight on humanity than very many others have. Mandela has worked for the human rights towards black and white people almost his entire life, and has had great success fighting this. Mandela sad many great things and one of those are: “As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest”. The meaning behind this quote from Mandela is that the world is unfair. People will not rest until it is no more poverty and injustice in the world. As long as this is in the world the people can`t rest. But it isn’t all the people in the world that can`t rest because of this. The people in the rich land can rest because they do not think over it because it isn’t in their society. But in the poor land this quote fits pretty well with it. I can see what Mandela means with his quote and I agree and disagree, I can sleep because the situation and the racism doesn’t really affect me or most people around me which it does in other countries and South-Africa which was the country Mandela lived in. For him injustices, poverty and gross inequalities were his surroundings since his birth. And these are the surroundings are what many people face in life, me on the other hand got lucky and luckily I didn’t grow up with these surroundings.
“As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest.” The meaning of this words he spoke is that people can’t rest until it is peace in the world and everyone it treated the same way. People can’t rest when it is still poverty, injustice and inequality in the world. We should fight against it. Everybody should be treated equally because everyone in the world is worth the same. It is easy to agree with these words because it is a lot of people in the world that live in poverty, injustice and inequality and we who don’t live with that should help them, not rest. An example is that some places in the world people live in extreme poverty and earn less than a dollar a day, which is very little. Other places in the world people earn a million dollar a day. This is very unfair.

ReplyDelete"To deny someone their human rights is to challenge their own humanity.”
ReplyDeleteWhy do we feel so strongly about our, and others rights? I believe it’s because there’s something deep down in us that truly despises injustice. To deny others their rights, is injustice. A part of us is empathetic, just and kind. To ignore that part of us is to challenge your own humanity. To not care about your fellow human beings, ignore the part of you that cares, twist your perception to justify not caring, is to challenge your own humanity. If you don’t have that part, are you really human? Isn’t that part of us what makes us human? I really agree with Mandela, as I think the empathetic, just and kind part of us is what makes us human. It’s the reason for why humans all over the world fight for justice. It’s the reason for why people, who deny them to others, have such a harsh time facing the reality of the world. Because truth is, nobody deserves human rights more than other people, independent of religion, race, sexuality or gender. In the end, we're all human. Through history, we can see several examples for why to deny others their human rights is to challenge their own humanity. The real world is filled with examples that support my point of view. An example is the sympathetic whites in America under the time of slavery and segregation who had a hard time ignoring the treatment of coloured. They had to supress the part of them that cared for their human rights, making them challenge themselves and their humanity.
“To deny someone their human right is to challenge their own humanity”
ReplyDeleteSince our existence humans have constantly tried to be better than everyone else and treated everyone who is slightly different, different. Just because that’s how humans have been doing it since our existence it does not make it right, but what is the correct answer then? How should we treat one another? Even though there are no correct answers we should still treat each other as we would like to be treated ourselves. Mandela is saying that if someone with authority treats a fellow human, like less of a human, they should doubt their own humanity. If they can treat someone that could just as easily be them by taking the persons human right away the person with the authority should consider how they would feel if the injustice was towards them. An example of people that were not able to ignore the injustices that are in this world is the white people in South-Africa that tried to put an end to apartheid and those who stood up to the whites fighting for white superior. I strongly support and believe in Mandela’s quote because what makes us humans are what we feel over one and other and how we act upon those feelings.

ReplyDeletePeople who dosent live in poverty should help the poor. Thats why he say "none of us can truly rest." Poverty its a hard thing to fight, and poverty its not all about have no money, it it also to have less right than others, like they have less rights than the rich people. In some countries, rich people have more rights than the people who is poor. All people can rest when it is peace and everyone is threated the same way, have the same rights. So the rich coutries have to help the poor countries, and fight the poverty.
