Who is James Gregory?

Create a well-developed paragraph that characterizes James Gregory from the film Farwell Bafana. Clearly state the type of person he is and find a quotation that accurately supports your opinion. Be certain to describe how the quotation fits your description of James and summarize your paragraph by stating something you have learned through his life. Your task:
  1. Describe the character of James Gregory.
  2. Find a quotation to support your opinion
  3. State something that you have learned from his life
  4. Avoid using “I” or “My” statements
The paragraph is about the character traits- his personality- and not about the movie or his job. Be careful not to plot summarize your paragraph. If you summarize the film, or just summarize his life on Robben Island, you are writing off topic.  The focus is on describing his personality and the type of person he was during a time of social change in South Africa.Be  certain to focus on:
        • words (adjectives) that best describe his personality.
        • a quotation that is only being used by you that focuses on his personality, character.
        • a paragraph is a paragraph.  DO not separate the sentences into various groups.

                1. Integrity is the art of standing by your moral principles and doing what is right. even if it is unpopular. In life, our beliefs will constantly be challenged by others and often times it is much easier to avoid conflict than to stand up for what we believe. It separates leaders from followers. James Gregory, the man from the autobiographical film, Farwell Bafana, is not a person who would avoid conflict for the sake of peace if it meant going against his own moral judgment. In his life, James demonstrated a willingness to challenge the popular beliefs of Apartheid in South Africa even if it left him unpopular with his colleagues. His courage, independence and determination to stand with Mandela could best be summed up with words of Mark Twain, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear.” Similar to James, he could not remove the fear from his life but he learned to master it to stay true to himself and his beliefs. Needless to say, we could all learn something from Mr. Gregory.

You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life. this is a quote by Winston Churchill the prime minister off England during worl war 2.

this quote says that if you have evered stood up for something u might got some people ho dosent like it but you stood up for what u belived in, and that is the importend part.

this movie taught vetle that he should not judge anyone before he meets them.

                5. James Gregory was a prison guard at Robben Island. In the beginning he was a lot like the other guards and didn’t treat the prisoners right, but the better he started to know Mandela, the better he understood that they were just trying to get treated equally. Something to learn from his life is, don’t stop following your path even if you get abandoned. “It’s easy to stand with the crowd. It takes courage to stand alone” is a well-fitting quote to James Gregory. He stood up against all the other prison guards, to do what he believed was the right thing to.

                6. There was many other guards in Robben Island, but alltho James Gregory was rased same as all the other guards, he changed thrue the time when he was a guard and he started to see that everything was wrong, and he was not scared to admit it, because if you dont see the problem, it doesnt mean there is no. ‘Dont be afraid to be different, be afraid of being the same as everyone else’ this quotasion describes James perfectly because he was different and he was not scared to admit It. The movie taught me that it’s good to be different, because if you are different it means you have the courage to stand up againt the problem, because all it takes to stop the problem is to stand up.

                7. James Gregory was a prison guard at Robben Island, in the beginning he was like the other guards and did not respect the blacks. But with time he started believing in them and he wanted to help the black people. Under the Apartheid alot of black people were treated very beadly, James wanted to change that. He knew that he could be killed because of this, but he did not listen to the others and kept on trying to help them until eventually he sucseede. What i've learned from his life is that no matter how much you want to help somebody you gotta keep on going until you sucseed. A quote to this could be ''No one has the power to shatter your dreams unless you give it to them.'' because James did not let anybody stop him from helping out Mandela and the others.

                8. James Gregory was a man with courage. To have courage and to be able to think for your own is an important ability. Courage is to do something good and right even if other people around you say it’s wrong. The quote goes like this: «Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear. » Ambrose Redmoon is with this quote trying to tell us that no matter how scared you are; when it comes to certain situations you just have to forget all fear because something else matters more. It is similar to James, he could not remove the fear from his life but he learned to overcome it to stay true to himself and his beliefs. James wanted everyone to be treated equal; therefore he tried to help the black people, instead of treating them badly like everyone else. This is something many can learn something of. If you know something is wrong, don’t continue doing it just because everyone else does. If nobody had dared to resist others, then discrimination still had been as badly it was before.

                9. Integrity is a word that describes James Gregory very well. Integrity is the quality of being honest, or to be a person that has strong moral principles. In this setting, Mr. Gregory decides to do what is right, even if it is unpopular. It is a hard choice to be integrity, because you have to go against what the group means. Often it is easier to avoid conflict, then stand up for your own beliefs and do what right. In the film “Farwell Bafana” James Gregory is dynamic because he choose to support his meanings, and go against the apartheid system in South Africa. In those circumstances it was hard, but Gregory had courage to stand up for what is right. “It is better to live of your own strength, than of others weakness.” – Anonymous. This quotation about integrity fits very well to James Gregory`s character in the film. He decided to be kind and support the colored people, instead of being against them for no reason actually.

                10. Avoiding conflict shows that you’re nothing but a coward, even when you know if you begin to fight you will be exiled from society. But if you don’t care and take the risk to fight you have shown courage and that’s exactly what Mr. Gregory is all about. And to show courage is maybe the most important ability a human can show. James Gregory from the autobiographical film, Farwell Bafana, is not a coward, he didn’t care what the others prison guard thought of his actions. He thought the outrages thing that was happening to the black society was wrong. This shows that he had courage. ``Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go``. What T. S. Eliot is trying to say whit this quote, is that if you believe in something and you have the courage to pursuit it. You should keep pursuing it and see how far you can go. This is similar to James, he took a massive risk. That took him farther than he ever could ever have imagined. Every man and woman on this earth can learn something from Mr. Gregory. The art of courage, taking risk to accomplish something beautiful and amazing

                11. James Gregory well developed man who struggles to believe that what is happening in society is the right way of treating other human beings. James Gregory is a man who is able to think without the influence of society and divide rights from wrongs. Courage is something James Gregory has a lot of and it is shown in the movie “Farwell Bafana”. Some may say that James Gregory was a very brave and good man. In my opinion he is far from perfect for not standing up for himself. He is keeping most of his toughts and actions to himself. I can’t say that I would do different but I feel like James could have done something to show people that he was different and saw what was wrong in the world. A quote to support my opinion is a quote from Michael Becksmith and it goes like this. “If you are not thinking for yourself, someone is thinking for you. Choose for yourself and become free from society’s undertow.” This fits well with my opinion because James did not do a lot to show that he was different but he was just thinking for himself. Most of his action was still dependent by society.

                12. To stand up for your own opinion and be able to act and make different choices than the rest of your people is to show a personality with a lot of braveness. Making different choices than the rest of your people although it makes you unpopular shows that you are able to stay true to yourself despite social pressure. A perfect example of such behaviour and moral is the officer on Robben Island, James Gregory, in the movie Farewell Bafana. James Gregory showed an ability and willingness to challenge his own people and act different. He is not a kind of person that is willing to avoid conflicts if it not supports his own statement. He challenged the popular belief Apartheid in South – Africa. Such behaviour can be summed up with this quote from his friend and earlier prisoner on Robben Island, Nelson Mandela. “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear”. The quote almost seems to be written about Gregory. He was afraid of the punishment and consequences, but Gregory still managed to win over the fear. We can all learn something from Gregory and his courage. To not follow the stream but rather be true to yourself and your own decisions. Never give up and fight for what you think is right, not others. Gregory showed absolutely courage, and therefor he became a role model for many coloured and also white people.

                13. James is a guard in a prison on Robben Island in the movie Farwell Bafana who is dynamic. That means that he changes more and more slowly. He changes with his experiences. He realizing that slavery is wrong fast. He is like the other guards at the beginning, disrespecting the blacks and threats them really bad. But he listened more and more to the blacks and wants to stop the slavery. It’s really similar to another film what is called Schindler`s list, were the character is with the Nazis and slowly change an go against hate of the jews. James shows what he thinks weakly because he doesn’t want to lose his job or get disrespected. James knows Mandela best of all the guards in the prison because he has the most contact with him, and he gets affected by Mandela the more he speaks to him, because Mandela is saying the thigs who is right. “Your opinion of me doesn’t define who I am”, that’s means that what others think about you is not true, sometimes. Another meaning is that the guards on Robben Island are defining the blacks as terrorists. But they´re not, they know themselves much more than others, that’s why it’s important to ignore the negative comments you get from others. We have learned something through James, and that is that it´s smart to listen to others sometimes, but you don’t need to believe, but you can get affected. Another thing is you know yourself better than others, and you´re strong if you dare to say your opinion and your thoughts in front of many others who disagree with you and you are staying on your side.

                14. In the movie, Farewell Bafana, James Gregory is a dynamic character that changes as a result of experience. In the beginning he follows the rules and does all the things that the boss in the prison tells him to do. Gregory had the responsibility for Mandela while he was working in the prison. After a while he saw that the prisoners and Mandela were treated badly. This made James Gregory change. In the beginning he did follow the rules, but after a while he didn’t care about the rules and started to “make” his own rules according to his own beliefs. Gregory risked everything when he changed and acted on it. He risked his job and his family. “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go” describes James Gregory very well. It says that only the persons who are willing to risk something are able to find out how far they can go. This quote describes James Gregory very well because he is pulling the rules and breaking them a lot in the prison. We can all learn something from James Gregory. Sometimes it is the best to make our own thoughts about things instead of following the stream.

                15. The man James Gregory is very independent you can see that in the Movie when he don’t think or act like everyone else. Gregory is a character that changes through the Movie, dynamic is a Word to describe Gregory changing through the Movie and becoming a better person. "Sometimes one creates a dynamic impression by saying something, and sometimes one creates as significant an impression by remaining silent" this quote is made by Dalai lama. I chose this quote because I think it is very meaning full and deep. And explains James Gregory`s personality very well, with that I mean Gregory is a man how didn’t kept silent he stood up for others rights. Gregory changed to a better man through the movie by stop caring what other think of him.

                17. Courage comes in many forms that a person can experience. To have courage is to have the ability to control your own fear in dangerous or difficult situations. It can also mean that a person needs to be brave and confident enough to do and fight for what he or she believes in. Martin Luther King Jr. once had a quote saying “We must build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear”. The quote says that to have courage, people must hold back the fear that’s holding the courage back. James Gregory was a courageous and independent man; he was a man who was very brave and stood up for what he believed in. Even though he knew that people didn’t like the idea of a white man having any relations with a black man, he still did it because he won over his fear of his society judging him. We can learn a lot from James Gregory and how he changed as a person. He taught us that you have to be brave and courageous even if you are afraid and that it’s better to try and fail than to not try at all. If we don’t have courage to handle tough decisions we can never grow and develop as individuals.

                18. James Gregory is an incredibly reflective man that stayed true to himself. It takes a lot of mental strength to be able to question everything you’ve been taught to see if it fits your moral code. In James Gregory’s case, it didn’t. He reflected and asked questions when no one else dared to, and that is not only admirable, but something that gets societies to evolve. Gregory saw that what that was happening in his county, the apartheid-system, was faulty. Instead of ignoring it and living on, he reflected and searched for answers. He was able to turn around his whole world to see the reality of the society he lived in. The quote by Deborah Day fits Gregory quite well, “Wisdom comes from reflection.” In James Gregory’s case, and I would suspect in most people’s case, it’s completely true. Not only did he get wiser from it, as he saw that his world was nothing like the propaganda media spread, he also made connections to wonderful people full of hope for a better future. Most certainly, we can all learn something very important from James Gregory. Don’t be afraid of asking questions, and don’t be afraid of searching for answers. Reflect, challenge yourself, grow.

                19. Should the world change in any ways, we depend on people who are willing to look at the world from new ways and who can change their own opinions based on such. People who are open for such diversifications, they own the ability of being dynamic. James Gregory was a man who had many qualities, one of them was the ability to be dynamic. During his lifetime, he changed his own thoughts by looking into it from a new prospective. In the beginning, Gregory accepted the ideology Apartheid. Later, however, his view at the Apartheid system changed as a result of his communication with one of his prisoners, Nelson Mandela. With Gregory‘s courage, willingness and last, but not least, his qualification to be dynamic, he managed to change his own thoughts and demonstrate against Apartheid. What James Gregory was able to perform, can be concluded with an important sentence from Norman Vincent Peale; “Change your thoughts and you change your world”. Behind these powerful words, we just don’t see what Gregory managed to complete. We also see where all of us around have to start if we will have the world to change. We could all learn from this quote, as well as from Mr. Gregory himself. All of us should start viewing the world from different and new sides, and hence be willing to change our thoughts. As a result of living up to this wisdom, we can all take part in changing our world in a better way!

                20. Courage is the ability to go your own way even if it means that you will be treated differently or worse than other people. It shows how a person can change when everything or something turns against him. Courage is not an object that every single person receives when given birth. No, it is something inside you that makes you do impossible things when others try not to. It separates leaders from followers. The main character from the film, Farewell Bafana, James Gregory was a man with great courage. He was not the type of person who would back off when justice was not served right. Although he knew that his questioning about Apartheid and his relationship with the colored people in South Africa would make him unpopular, he showed courage to not take no for an answer. He was fully aware of his risk. James Gregory`s courage could not have been summed up better than the words of Coco Chanel, “The most courageous act is still to think for yourself, aloud”. When people think about courage they usually picture someone who is a strong person physically. But, a courageous person does not have to own any muscles or knowledge; he just has to think for himself. Mr. Gregory thought for himself and did not listen to what every one else told him was true because he knew it was not. It takes courage to do so when others will not. We can all learn something from James Gregory. It is important to question those in power to make the world a better place. With that comes great courage and pride.

                23. A dynamic person is someone who is changing by acting on what they thinks and believes. It may for example be that you see something on a different way than you did before. The way the person tolerating to get new thoughts and what they believe in can be very hard sometime to stand up for. That’s why this adjective describes the person James Gregory from the film, Farwell Bafana very well. Through his life James change the way he sees the world. Before he was just a man who doesn’t care about how the reality in world really was, he actually couldn’t see the problems in the world. The way that the people with dark skin were treated differently than the withe people, his daughter showed him how wrong it was to treat someone like they did. When he saw how his daughter reacted so hard when some white people just took some black people with no reason in front of them. From that day James started to think that this was not a fair thing to do with someone. The way he changed by seeing something another way can sum up with a very interesting quote from Nikos Kazantzakis, «Since we cannot change reality, let us change the eyes which see reality». This quote says so much about James, he learned that the world is not always the way you think it is, but if you open your eyes we will see how the reality in the world really is, how unfair people are being treated. We could all learn something from James Gregory, there is much in life that we don’t see because we are not opening our eyes for that.

                24. To change someone or something could be hard, but if you want a change you have to start with yourself. What can I do? To become a new and change person is just as hard you make it to. The officer James Gregory is regular officer with family and children. Then one day he gets the message that he is getting transferred to Robben Island. Officer Gregory was put in charge of the mail which came out and in to the prisoners, because he understood the South- African language Xhosa. Gregory was a man with strength and courage. He had the willingness and courage to stand on the other side of the conflict, between Apartheid and the black. Before the transferred he was just as all the other officers with the same thoughts: the black people were worthless. After spending time on having charge of Nelson Mandela, the change began. Gregory started to ask questions, taking huge risk and feel empathy for the blacks. Something that was unpopular among his colleagues. “Change is the end result of all true learning “Leo Buscaglia quote captures Mr Gregory development as person very well. Mr Gregory slowly changed as person, everything Mandela told him and spoke about, had a huge impact on Gregory. People effect people, but you decide if you want a change. You can have as many smart friends you want, but it is up to you what chose things in life. However if it right or wrong. Do you want to follow the stream or stand for what you mean is right? It’s you decision

                25. James Gregory was a prison officer at Robben Island. His job was to guard Nelson Mandela and his friends. A word who describes James Gregory is dynamic, because he changed a lot in the movie. James Gregory started to realize how unfair the system in the society was and he started to be kind with Mandela and his friends. He was one of the few people who wanted to help Nelson Mandela. His thoughts about Nelson Mandela changed a lot from the beginning of the film to the end. In the beginning he believed that Nelson Mandela was a bad person but after a while he realized that Nelson Mandela is a good person who just wants peace in the world between blacks and whites. Gregory developed and saw that the world was not quite as he thought. Before he thought that the blacks were terrorists and that the authorities did nothing wrong towards the blacks. But he started to think for himself and followed what he believed was right. “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go”. – T. S. Eliot. This quote fits Gregory because he risked going too far and he risked everything for the truth. He risked his job and his family. You will never find out how far you can go if you never dry. We could all learn something from James Gregory. One thing we can learn is that you need to think for yourself and do what you think is right. You don’t always need to think and do like everyone else.

                26. In the film Farewell Bafana we meet James Gregory, a follower of the crowd who in the end changed and showed how he as a dynamic person developed from his experiences. At the beginning of the film, Gregory acts in a conformist way which didn’t show his true opinions about apartheid and how Mandela and the other inmates were treated. Throughout the film Gregory becomes more courageous, fearless and independent which resulted in him seeing how wrongfully racism and segregation is. His decisions and acts were no longer affected by the opinions of the crowd, instead he acted completely independently and in the way he himself wanted to act. E. e. Cummings once said, “it takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” The words perfectly sum up Gregory’s evolution as a person. He found courage and a willingness to follow his own beliefs and in the end he became his own person.
